Walgreens Register Reward Challenge

In most weeks Walgreens sales ads offer Register Rewards (or RRs) for purchasing certain items during that week. The Register Rewards can be used on your next purchase of anything in the store.
My Challenge will be to track
  1. How much I have spent OOP (out of pocket)
  2. My OOP cost : amount of Register Rewards
  3. Retail value of items I have purchased with the RRs.
  4. How long I can keep using the RRs I received the week of May 16th – May 22nd
From May 16th – May 22nd they were offering $4.50 RR when you purchased Gillette body wash for $4.49. I was starting out with no Register Rewards since I had spent all of my RRs the week before. I did the following transaction 6 times.
  • Gillette Deodorant $5.79
  • Gillette Body Wash $4.49
Coupons Used
  • MFQ Gil. Deo -$2.00
  • MFQ Gil. B.W. -$4.49
  • sub total $3.79
I spent $3.79 per transaction and received $4.50 in RR on each transaction. On the 6 transactions I paid $22.74 OOP (out of pocket) and I received 6 Gillette Deodorants, 6 Gillette Body Washes plus $27 RRs.
  1. I spent $22.74 OOP (out of pocket)
  2. $22.74 OOP : $27 RR
  3. Retail value of all items purchased $61.68
  4. 1st week
If you would like to try this yourself there are a few things I should explain about Walgreens and RRs. When using RRs, you need to be careful that you are not trying to get another RR from the same company. If you tried to use the $4.50 in RR you received when you bought Gillette body wash on Old Spice body wash expecting to get another $4.50 in RR, you would not receive it. Walgreens counts your RRs as a coupon and their coupon policy requires that you are purchasing 1 item per coupon used. So if you have 2 $3 RRs and try to use them both when buying 1 item the registers will not let you…this is when you will want to have a filler item or an inexpensive item you found in the store as a filler. If the item you are purchasing is less expensive than the RR, you will need to add a filler item.  You only receive 1 RR for each RR producing item per transaction, if you buy 2 or more of the same item producing RRs in 1 transaction you will only receive 1 RR.  If you would like multiples of an item that produces RRs, you will need to purchase them in seperate transactions.

Are you paying more in sales tax then you have to?

Many of the stores I shop at do not deduct the total of my coupons on taxable items, even though the PA Department of Revenue allows them to do so. I am being over taxed, are you?

This week at Walgreens I did the following transaction 6 times.
  • Gillette Deodorant $5.79
  • Gillette Body Wash $4.49
Coupons Used
  • MFQ Gil. Deo -$2.00
  • MFQ Gil. B.W. -$4.49
  • sub total $3.79
I should have been taxed on $3.79 x 7% or $.27.

I was taxed on $10.28 x 7% or $.72.

That is $.45 on all 6 of my transactions that I was overcharged, essentially I was over taxed $2.70 at Walgreens.

I had the same thing happen at Giant Eagle. Yesterday I brought in this weeks receipts to Customer Service at Giant Eagle and they refunded me my $4.93 they had over taxed me.

I was over taxed $7.63 this past week, if the same thing happened every week I would be over taxed $396.73 in a year.

Giant Eagle and Walgreens are not the only ones over taxing their customers. The same thing has happened at Kmart and Walmart.

What can you do to prevent this? Print out a copy of this article, Coupon Clippers Don't Reap Full Benefit at Big Stores, from the December 20, 2009 Pittsburgh Post Gazette and keep it in your Coupon Envelope. After you check out, review your receipt, if you were over taxed take the receipt and the article to customer service and ask for the refund you deserve. If we all do this, maybe the stores will fix their registers to stop over taxing us every time we use coupons on taxable merchandise.

Hooray to Shop N Save and Target who deduct coupons on taxable items before charging sales tax.

I will also be adding the following PPG article in my Coupon Envelope.
Coupons and sales tax: Know the rules

Betty Crocker Member Exclusive Sweepstakes, Trip for 2 to NYC

Betty Crocker is hosting a sweepstakes for a trip for 2 to New York City.
This offer is for Members only so if you are not yet a member,
you can sign up and enter HERE.

The Beginning

I have had many requests to share how I am able to save so much money while I shop.  It really is not a secret, and I am happy to share with anyone who interested.  I plan my shopping trips according to local sales ads and the coupons that are available.  When trying to decide the easiest way for me to share information on sales and coupons with my family and friends, I decided to start this blog.  This is my first experience with blogging, so please offer tips and be patient while I am learning.
